Top 1996 Songs – #13 – Counting Blue Cars

Just like one of the other songs on this countdown, this is another that has managed to stick around and be heard and played in many different avenues. Most people don’t know the name of this group, but they can certainly tell you the title of the song. It’s still a great listen, and will no doubt bring back great memories for those that lived during this time. Coming in at #13 is Counting Blue Cars (Tell Me All Your Thoughts on God) by Dishwalla.

Top 1986 Songs – #13 – What Have You Done For Me Lately

One of the biggest pop and R&B artists of the 20th century made her official debut during this year, and this is the first of two tracks that made it to this list. This one is probably my favorite of the two, given that every time I sing the title I can’t help but sing the musical melody after that. It’s that catchy, and funky too. Coming in at #13 is What Have You Done For Me Lately by Janet Jackson.

Top 1986 Songs – #14 – Your Love

Our next song in the countdown of top 20 songs turning 40 years old this year is another example of a “fine wine” track. It was a hit when it came out but has seemingly gotten more if not just as popular now as it did back then. The production is time-capsuled to the 80s but the song and melody are strong enough to continue to be heard and played today. Coming in at #14 is Your Love by The Outfield.

Top 1996 Songs – #14 – Because You Loved Me

The 1980s spawned a soundtrack king in Kenny Loggins. The 1990s spawned a queen writer and singer. The writer – Diane Warren; the singer – Celine Dion. Already a household name, this song set Celine on a path to superstardom, only for it to be eclipsed by another the following year (we’ll get to that next time). But for now, enjoy this tune that still, on its merits, is a great song and performance. At #14 it’s Because You Loved Me by Celine Dion.

Top 1996 Songs – #15 – Tonight, Tonight

A quarter of the way through this countdown and we return to rock, but on the more orchestral side. 1996 was a banner year for this group, garnering a Record of the Year nomination for one track, and gaining widespread recognition with this one. This group only had a handful of songs still being played today, and this may be the biggest one in their arsenal. Our #15 song turning 30 years old this year is Tonight, Tonight by The Smashing Pumpkins.

Top 1986 Songs – #15 – Sledgehammer

I remembered when this song literally swept all the MTV Video Music Awards the year it came out. This artist had already established himself as a worldwide superstar, but this song and video literally made him a legend with the MTV generation. The song still holds up today and is covered quite a bit by various bands. At #15 it’s Sledgehammer by Peter Gabriel.
